The Holocaust, a very tough topic for any book, but a picture book... Just proves how much of a Rockstar Jane Yolen is and she is a rock star. Especially with lines like this- "As we ran, the Paris wind-soft as Maman's hand brushing my hair -teasing little wisps from my braids.
This book touches on the ugly of this part of history with such skill the harsh and brutal aspects perfectly balanced by human kindness never full overwhelm the reader. Yolen shares history, but with the heart of a mother provides care and shelter to the reader. Green's illustrations help Yolen in her comforting endeavor with the soft pallet and soft lines a perfect combination.
