A little 144 word ditty for #springflingkidlit 2022

 Mosquito’s Spring Serenade

By Laura N. Clement

Word Count: 144

Undercovers,

windows open,

awake,

not sleeping,

I wish to dream.

Body tired,

Eyelids drooping,

I long for peaceful sleep,

while fresh aromas,

in spring air magic,

waft the sheets above my feet.

I dare not rest.

I dare not nod.

I dare not move an inch.

A thunderstorm,

Thump-Thump,

Thump-Thump

of heartbeats…distract and strain my ears.

With breath withheld, hands tense and ready, I listen…

She’s here, in my room,

              eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEeeeeee

near my bed,

              EEeeeeeeeeeeEEEeeeeeee

flying circles above my head…

EEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeEEEeeeee

Close,

EEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeee

And closer,

EEEEEEEEEEEEeeeee…eeeEEEEEE…

Hungry,

EeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeee

Her serenade,

overwhelming,

until—All QUIET—RUSTLE—SLAP!

I missed.

She flies away,

              EeeeeeeeeeeeeeEeeeeEEEeeeeeEeeeeEEEeeeee

And the night ticks on S—L—O—W—L—Y as I slip restlessly, into sleep.

And the hungry monster,

takes…

EeeeeeeeeeeeeeEeeeeEEEeeeeeEeeeeEEEeeeee

…Her…

EeeeeEEEeeeee

Time.

Awake from dreaming,

Morning rested,

Fresh and warm and cozy,

I stretch, then…

Scratch…

  1. Oh my goodness, I'm giggling!
Great job making us feel that tense waiting with mosquitos in the room.
